Windows 11 24H2 Update Fails Again with 0x80240069 Error Code: Troubleshooting Guide

The KB5063878 Windows 11 24H2 cumulative update, released earlier this week, has encountered installation failures on numerous systems, particularly affecting Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) users. Reports from Windows administrators on social media and BleepingComputer indicate that these users are experiencing 0x80240069 errors while attempting to install the August 2025 security updates. Affected devices display messages such as “Service wuauserv has unexpectedly stopped” and “The Windows Update service terminated unexpectedly” in the event log. One administrator noted that despite the update being approved in their WSUS environment, all existing 24H2 clients failed to install, while another reported 100 failures via SCCM with the same error code. Since this issue predominantly impacts systems receiving updates through WSUS, home users are unlikely to face similar problems, as WSUS is typically utilised in enterprise settings.

While Microsoft has not yet confirmed these update issues or provided an official fix, some administrators have suggested a temporary workaround. This workaround involves manually importing the update into WSUS using specific IDs: WSUS Sync: Update-ID 8018eab0-7242-4932-adf2-afda36f6b3f6 and Update Catalog Import: Update-ID 92061378-be93-4659-a72a-037225e6bb0f. This is not the first instance of a Windows update failing to be delivered via WSUS, as Microsoft previously acknowledged a similar issue in April, which also resulted in 0x80240069 errors for enterprise customers updating Windows 11 22H2/23H2 systems. The company addressed that issue in May by implementing a fix through Known Issue Rollback (KIR) for all enterprise-managed devices.
