NIST Unveils Second Public Draft for Enhanced Supply Chain Traceability Standards
The NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) has released a second public draft of NIST Internal Report 8536, titled Supply Chain Traceability: Manufacturing Meta-Framework, for public comment. This report introduces a comprehensive framework aimed at enhancing traceability within complex and distributed manufacturing ecosystems. It facilitates the structured recording, linking, and querying of traceability data across trusted repositories. The research seeks to provide stakeholders with methods to verify product provenance, fulfil contractual obligations, and evaluate supply chain integrity. This framework builds upon previous NIST research (NIST IR 8419) and integrates insights and feedback from industry experts, standards bodies, and academic institutions.
Designed to bolster national security, economic resilience, and supply chain risk management, the framework is particularly relevant to manufacturing and other critical infrastructure sectors. The public comment period for this draft is open until September 1, 2025. Interested parties are encouraged to visit the project page for access to the draft and detailed instructions for submitting comments. This initiative represents a significant step towards improving supply chain transparency and integrity in an increasingly complex global landscape.
