My ChatGPT conversations are being optimized for better SEO through Google indexing.

ChatGPT users utilising the “share” feature, which allows them to share conversations with the chatbot via URLs, have recently discovered that Google and other search engines are indexing these links. This indexing enables strangers to search for and read private conversations. Reports indicate that some users have figured out how to specifically search for pages with the chatgpt.com/share URL, granting them access to browse through others’ private discussions. While many conversations may seem innocuous, the growing reliance on AI for daily tasks raises concerns about the potential exposure of personal data, including sensitive medical information, financial details, and embarrassing anecdotes.

Furthermore, users who engage with the chatbot for purposes such as resume writing face additional risks, as they often share substantial personal information, including job history and contact details. Until recent media reports, many users were unaware that sharing their conversations with friends and colleagues could inadvertently make them public. Google has clarified that the indexation of these pages is beyond their control, stating, “Neither Google nor any other search engine controls what pages are made public on the web.” This situation highlights the importance of user awareness regarding privacy when using AI tools.
