Microsoft Unintentionally Confirms Upcoming GPT-5, GPT-5-Mini, and GPT-5-Nano Before Official Launch
OpenAI is set to host a live stream at 10 AM PT to announce GPT-5, but Microsoft has already provided confirmation of the details. A now-removed GitHub document revealed that GPT-5 is launching later today, marking the first official announcement of its release. Microsoft outlined several models within the GPT-5 family, including the base model, simply named GPT-5, which is tailored for logic and multi-step tasks. Additionally, there is GPT-5-mini, a lightweight version aimed at cost-sensitive applications, and GPT-5-nano, optimised for speed and low latency. The new GPT-5 chat model is designed for advanced, natural, multimodal, and context-aware conversations, particularly for enterprise use.
According to the archived GitHub blog, GPT-5 is OpenAI’s most advanced model, boasting significant enhancements in reasoning, code quality, and user experience. Microsoft noted that GPT-5 can manage complex coding tasks with minimal prompting while providing clear explanations. The model introduces enhanced agentic capabilities, positioning it as a powerful coding collaborator and intelligent assistant for users. Reports indicate that GPT-5 can seamlessly switch between reasoning and non-reasoning modes, with users able to prompt it to engage in deeper reasoning when necessary. While the specifics of its reasoning capabilities remain unclear, it is suggested that OpenAI may be utilising a built-in reasoning model to facilitate this functionality.
