Implications of GPT-5 for IT Teams, Developers, and the Future of AI in the Workplace

OpenAI has released GPT-5, the latest iteration of its large language model, now accessible to developers and ChatGPT users. This version introduces significant advancements in how artificial intelligence can be utilised in business and IT environments. GPT-5 (with thinking) demonstrates improved performance compared to OpenAI O3, achieving 50-80% fewer output tokens across various capabilities, including visual reasoning, agentic coding, and graduate-level scientific problem solving. Unlike its predecessors, GPT-5 employs a novel approach that allows it to determine the best response dynamically. For simpler tasks, it provides quick answers, while for more complex queries, it engages a deeper reasoning engine. Users can also prompt it to “think step by step” for more thoughtful responses.

Another notable enhancement in GPT-5 is its approach to safety. Previous versions often declined to answer certain questions outright, but GPT-5 aims to respond with context while adhering to safety guidelines. This shift results in fewer dead ends and more productive interactions for professionals who rely on AI. Additionally, GPT-5 features a significantly larger memory window, capable of remembering and processing up to 256,000 tokens of text in a single session. This expanded memory allows it to maintain focus during lengthy conversations or when analysing extensive documents, making it particularly beneficial for tasks such as coding, documentation, or business report analysis.

Max Sinclair, CEO of Azoma, remarked that GPT-5 signifies a fundamental shift in commerce technology. He noted that this AI does not merely process transactions; it fosters genuine customer relationships through memory and context that can span months or even years. Customers will no longer need to repeat themselves, as the system learns their preferences, styles, and seasonal habits, enabling relationship commerce at scale. The multimodal capabilities of GPT-5 are also noteworthy, allowing customers to interact with ChatGPT through images, voice, or video, thereby reducing friction between physical and digital retail environments. Sinclair expressed excitement about GPT-5’s autonomous reasoning capabilities, which are designed to excel in logical reasoning and handle complex coding tasks with minimal prompting. He anticipates that many start-ups and existing vendors will reinvent customer experiences based on this innovative technology.

For developers, GPT-5 introduces new tools such as code generation, reasoning toggles, and the ability to adjust verbosity. It also includes a feature called free-form function calling, which facilitates the automation of more complex workflows without rigid API structures. Several versions of GPT-5 are available, with a standard version offering full capabilities, while smaller versions provide faster performance or lower resource usage.
