How to Resolve Windows 11 24H2 Update Failures with Error Code 0x80240069
Microsoft has resolved a known issue that was preventing the August 2025 Windows 11 24H2 cumulative update from being delivered via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Introduced nearly two decades ago, WSUS allows IT administrators to defer, approve, and schedule updates for Microsoft products across enterprise networks from a single local update server, rather than requiring each endpoint to update directly from Microsoft’s servers. The company confirmed the issue following widespread reports from Windows administrators regarding error code 0x80240069 when attempting to install the Windows 11 24H2 KB5063878 update. Affected users also noted new entries in the Windows Event Log, including messages indicating that the “Service wuauserv has unexpectedly stopped” and “The Windows Update service terminated unexpectedly.”
While a fix for this update issue has not yet been rolled out to all customers via Windows Update, Microsoft has begun automatically deploying a solution through Known Issue Rollback (KIR) to all enterprise-managed devices. To address the bug, Windows administrators must implement the Known Issue Rollback Group Policy on impacted devices running Windows 11 24H2. This requires the use of the Group Policy Editor to select the targeted Windows version in either the Local Computer Policy or the Domain Policy on the domain controller, followed by a restart of the affected devices to apply the settings. For those preferring to wait for a future update, Microsoft has advised that affected customers can manually install the KB5063878 cumulative update via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog. This is not the first instance of issues with WSUS, as similar problems were reported in April regarding updates for Windows 11 22H2/23H2 systems, which were subsequently addressed in May through KIR.
