Google Warns of Potential Opportunistic Iranian Cyber Attacks Targeting Australia
Google’s Threat Intelligence Group has indicated an increased likelihood of pro-Iran hacktivists targeting Australian organisations. This assessment follows the Australian government’s decision to expel Iran’s ambassador due to revelations of Iranian involvement in attacks on Australia’s Jewish community. Andrew Aston, Threat Intelligence Lead for ANZ at Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, stated that the government’s allegations of direct Iranian involvement in a Melbourne synagogue attack have heightened the risk of Iran-aligned hacktivist campaigns against Australian targets.
Aston warned that Australian entities should prepare for a rise in opportunistic Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, website defacements, and “data-leak theatrics.” These actions are often designed to generate headlines that exceed their actual impact. He noted that such campaigns typically combine cyber actions with influence operations to promote coordinated narratives. Aston advised Australian organisations to enhance their alertness, rehearse their response plans, and strengthen their public-facing assets in anticipation of these threats.
