Genea Data Breach Under Investigation by Class Action Law Firm: What You Need to Know
In February, Genea disclosed that it had experienced a cyber attack resulting in data theft, an incident that was promptly claimed by the Termite ransomware group. Initially, the company did not inform its customers about the specific data that had been compromised. However, in July, Genea’s CEO, Tim Yeoh, confirmed that the stolen data included patient full names, phone numbers, dates of birth, addresses, Medicare card numbers, medical diagnoses, and clinical information related to services received from Genea or other health service providers. Following this breach, the Supreme Court of NSW issued a permanent injunction preventing the publication and sharing of the stolen data.
Despite these measures, customers expressed disappointment with Genea’s handling of the situation. A former customer, who had undergone multiple unsuccessful rounds of IVF with Genea over two years, remarked that the company seemed to downplay the risks associated with the data theft. In response to growing concerns, the law firm Phi Finney McDonald initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the breach. Principal lawyer Tania Noonan emphasised that patients at Genea deserve the highest levels of privacy and safety to ensure their personal details and medical histories remain secure.
