Exclusive: Australia’s Leading Home Builder Confirms Ransomware Attack

The Qilin ransomware operation has identified Metricon Homes, a prominent home builder based in Victoria, as a victim on its darknet leak site. The hackers claim to have stolen 128 gigabytes of sensitive data, which includes confidential financial documents, proprietary architectural plans, and internal marketing strategies. In a leak post dated 21 July, a Qilin affiliate stated that the acquired data could significantly harm Metricon, as it contains materials that may provide competitors with a substantial strategic advantage, potentially weakening the company’s market position.

The hackers assert that the exfiltrated data comprises over 98,000 files, with several screenshots and documents already shared on the dark web as evidence of the breach. This data includes details about company credits, employee information, credit card receipts, finance and HR records, profit and loss statements, as well as staff salaries and commission rates. The hackers have indicated that they plan to fully publish the data within seven days. In response to the incident, Metricon Homes has acknowledged experiencing an IT issue and confirmed that it is actively addressing a cyber incident that temporarily affected access to its internal systems and networks.
