Greencross Vets and the Animal Referral & Emergency Network (AREN) have introduced an AI medical scribe to over 140 GP clinics and 24 specialist and emergency hospitals across Australia. This initiative addresses the significant strain on the veterinary sector, which is exacerbated by the country’s high rate of pet ownership and a shortage of veterinary professionals. With approximately 28.7 million pets and only around 15,000 vets, Australia faces an average of one vet for every 2,000 pets. This disparity creates pressure on clinics, increases workloads for veterinarians, and results in long waiting times for pet owners. The partnership with Australian health tech firm Heidi Health aims to alleviate these challenges by integrating an AI-powered medical scribe that automatically generates structured medical records from consultations, thereby reducing the need for manual note-taking and administrative tasks.

Since its rollout, the Heidi Health AI scribe has supported more than 5,000 consultations each week, with some veterinarians reportedly saving up to nine hours per week that would typically be spent on paperwork. This allows for greater focus on patient care and shorter waiting periods for pet owners. The scribe technology has been adopted in over 35 per cent of total consultations nationwide within Greencross Vets and AREN’s network, with some clinics and hospitals utilising it in over 60 per cent of consultations. Dr Magdoline Awad, Chief Veterinary Officer at Greencross Pet Wellness Company, emphasises the revolutionary impact of Heidi Health, stating that it streamlines day-to-day work and enables vets to dedicate more time to providing quality care to pets and connecting with their families. The positive feedback from teams indicates a promising future for the technology, with plans for further expansion in the coming months.
