Adjust my Google settings to enable AI Mode as the default option for improved SEO.
Google is planning to enhance user access to its AI mode by allowing individuals to set it as their default search option, potentially replacing the traditional blue links. AI mode, which utilises large language models, offers advanced features such as summarising web information, answering complex queries, processing images, and even assisting with coding tasks. Currently, AI mode is optional and located on the left of the “All” tab, making it easy for users to discover and prefer it over conventional search results. Logan Kilpatrick, the Product Lead at Google AI Studio, hinted at the possibility of AI mode becoming the default, while Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, clarified that the company aims to facilitate access for those who wish to use it. Users will have the option to toggle AI mode as their default, meaning traditional blue links will not appear by default, but can still be accessed via the “Web” tab.
As Google explores the implications of making AI mode the default search experience, it is also testing advertising strategies within this new framework. The digital marketing landscape remains uncertain about the impact of replacing blue links with AI summaries, especially given Google’s dominant 90% market share in search. While Google claims that AI-generated summaries lead to higher quality clicks for publishers, independent research from Pew suggests that fewer users are likely to click on web results when presented with AI summaries. This has prompted discussions among independent publishers about forming a “NATO for News” alliance to address the challenges posed by these changes. As Google navigates these developments, the future of its ad business and the broader implications for content creators remain critical considerations.
