Exclusive: Veeam Calls for Accelerated Data Recovery Amid Rising Cyber Threats
Executives from Veeam Software have highlighted the urgent need for rapid recovery, AI-powered detection, and board-level support in the face of a growing cyber threat landscape. In a joint interview, Gary Mitchell, Veeam’s Vice President and General Manager for ANZ, and John Jester, the company’s global Chief Revenue Officer, discussed a new wave of ransomware attacks that are being supercharged by artificial intelligence. Jester explained that cyber criminals are leveraging AI to enhance their efficiency, enabling them to penetrate organisations, encrypt and exfiltrate data, and issue ransom demands within a mere 24 hours. He emphasised that it is a race against time, prompting Veeam to adopt AI for detecting previously unseen threats and automating responses, such as initiating immutable backups.
Mitchell noted that ransomware has evolved from being a back-office IT concern to a critical boardroom priority. He observed that board members who have experienced breaches in previous roles are now advocating for cyber resilience initiatives from the top down. This shift indicates that it is no longer solely the responsibility of the Chief Information Security Officer to address these issues; the C-suite is increasingly involved. Additionally, the regulatory landscape is tightening, with reforms like the Security of Critical Infrastructure legislation compelling companies to elevate their standards. Mitchell remarked on the growing awareness and duty of care from both businesses and customers, who expect their data to be protected responsibly.
