Beyond HR: The Business Risks of Cyber Burnout

The recent surge in cyber attacks has prompted organisations to ramp up hiring, invest in advanced tools, and develop new strategies. However, for cybersecurity to flourish, it is essential to nurture and support its workforce. Evolving attack tactics, emerging technologies, and changing regulations have placed immense pressure on IT and cybersecurity teams. Currently, there are no days off for cybersecurity, which translates to continuous demands on cyber professionals. This relentless pace is unsustainable and poses significant risks to both employees and organisations.

Cyber burnout has become a critical issue within the cybersecurity sector. According to Sophos’ Future of Cybersecurity in APJ 2025 report, 58 per cent of Australian cyber professionals occasionally experience burnout, a slight improvement from 69 per cent in 2024. Alarmingly, 20 per cent of these professionals report frequent burnout, an increase from 17 per cent the previous year. The primary factors contributing to this burnout include heightened threat activity and the overwhelming demands placed on cybersecurity teams. Organisations must prioritise the well-being of their cyber employees to mitigate the risk of burnout and its potential impact on overall business operations.
