OpenAI Unveils Major Upgrade to ChatGPT Codex for Enhanced Agentic Coding Capabilities

OpenAI has announced a significant update for Codex, its agentic coding tool, introducing a new Visual Studio Code extension and enhanced synchronisation support between web and terminal environments. Users with a Plus or Pro subscription can now utilise Codex across all builds, regardless of the platform, including integration within their terminal or Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Codex has always been accessible via the web, and now it extends its functionality to Windows Terminal. OpenAI emphasises that users can seamlessly connect their ChatGPT accounts, allowing for uninterrupted workflow between local environments and Codex’s cloud services.

Additionally, the update features a new extension for Cursor, a Visual Studio-based tool, enabling Codex integration into VS Code, Cursor, and other VS Code forks. This integration is available in both the IDE and Command Line Interface (CLI), eliminating the need for API key setup and providing direct access through existing ChatGPT plans. OpenAI has also introduced Seamless Local ↔ Cloud Handoff, enabling developers to work locally with Codex and delegate tasks to the cloud for asynchronous execution without losing state. Furthermore, the Codex CLI has received upgrades, including new commands and bug fixes. Other companies, such as Claude, are also exploring similar integrations for their web coding agents.
