OpenAI Introduces New GPT-5 Models and Revives O3 and O4-Mini: A Chaotic Update Unfolds
Many users expressed frustration over the confusing array of models available in ChatGPT. OpenAI had promised that GPT-5 would simplify this issue, but the recent update appears to have complicated matters further. Previously, GPT-5 offered two variants: GPT, which auto-rotated between reasoning and non-reasoning tasks, and GPT-Thinking, which focused solely on reasoning. The latest update introduces a more extensive model selection menu under GPT-5, featuring options such as Auto, Fast, Thinking Mini, Thinking, and Pro, catering to various user needs. While users can select their preferred model, the default GPT-5 setting allows OpenAI to automatically choose the most suitable model based on the query.
Additionally, the update includes a Legacy Models section, which comprises GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, o3, and o4-mini. Users who do not see the Legacy section can enable it by accessing their profile tab, selecting Settings, and turning on Legacy Models. This feature is available exclusively for ChatGPT Plus and Pro accounts. As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, users are encouraged to stay informed about the latest developments and options available to enhance their experience.
