Understanding the Impact of the Matter 1.4.2 Update on Smart Home Security

Matter is founded on the principle that smart home devices should be secure, reliable, and user-friendly. It utilises Internet Protocol (IP) to facilitate communication between devices, mobile applications, and cloud services. The recent update, Matter 1.4.2, enhances the standard by introducing improvements in security, certification, infrastructure, and coordination across the ecosystem. These enhancements are based on industry best practices and insights gained from existing Matter devices. The update maintains full backward compatibility; however, many new features will require collaboration between device manufacturers and platform providers for effective implementation. Developers are encouraged to work closely with partners to ensure the successful deployment of these updates.

One of the significant advancements in Matter 1.4.2 is the introduction of Wi-Fi-only commissioning through Wi-Fi Unsynchronised Service Discovery (USD). This allows devices to join a Matter ecosystem over Wi-Fi without the need for Bluetooth Low Energy (LE). For manufacturers, this change can lead to cost reductions and simplified designs by eliminating the need for Bluetooth LE hardware solely used for commissioning. Existing Wi-Fi-only devices can also be updated to support Matter without requiring hardware modifications. For users, this development translates to a wider range of device options and a straightforward setup process, even in the absence of Bluetooth LE. As commissioners like phones, hubs, and smart speakers gradually adopt this feature, it is expected to result in more affordable devices and a reliable setup experience.
