Bouygues Telecom Confirms Data Breach Affecting 6.4 Million Customers: What You Need to Know
Bouygues Telecom has reported a significant data breach affecting the personal information of 6.4 million customers due to a cyberattack that occurred on August 4, 2025. As one of France’s largest telecommunications providers, Bouygues Telecom serves 14.5 million mobile subscribers and generates an annual revenue of €56.8 billion ($66 billion). The company confirmed that while customer services and networks remained unaffected, the breach allowed unauthorized access to sensitive customer data, including contact details, contract information, civil status data, company details for business customers, and International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs). Importantly, no credit card numbers or Bouygues Telecom account passwords were compromised. Bouygues Telecom has since blocked the attacker’s access, enhanced monitoring, and implemented additional security measures.
The cyberattack was attributed to a known cybercriminal group targeting specific internal resources. Bouygues Telecom has informed the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) and the CNIL, the French data protection authority, about the incident. The perpetrator could face severe penalties, including up to five years of imprisonment and a €150,000 fine. Customers are being alerted to the breach via SMS and email, but they are now at increased risk of fraud and phishing attempts. Bouygues Telecom advises customers to remain vigilant and not disclose sensitive information to anyone claiming to represent the company. Although the leaked IBANs do not allow for immediate transfers, affected individuals are encouraged to monitor their bank accounts closely for any suspicious activity.
